How to Measure Social Media ROI: Metrics That Actually Matter for Business Growth

Likes and followers are vanity metrics. Here are the numbers that actually tell you if your social media investment is paying off.

The ROI Problem

A Sprout Social survey found that 55% of marketers say proving social media ROI is their biggest challenge. The problem is not that social media does not work. It is that most businesses track the wrong metrics. Follower count, likes, and impressions feel good but do not tell you if social media is generating revenue.

True social media ROI connects your social efforts to business outcomes: leads generated, revenue influenced, customer acquisition cost, and lifetime value.

Metrics That Matter

1. Engagement Rate (Not Total Engagement): Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) / reach x 100. A 3 to 6% rate is strong. This tells you if your content resonates with the people who actually see it.

2. Click-Through Rate (CTR): How many people click your links, visit your website, or take action from social posts. This measures intent, not just attention.

3. Leads Generated: Track how many leads come from social media using UTM parameters, landing pages, or direct attribution. This is the bridge between social activity and sales pipeline.

4. Cost Per Lead (CPL): Total social media spend (time + tools + ads) divided by leads generated. Compare this to your other channels.

5. Conversion Rate: What percentage of social media leads become paying customers? This tells you about lead quality, not just quantity.

6. Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): Total marketing spend divided by new customers acquired through social. The lower, the better.

Setting Up Tracking

  • Use UTM parameters on every link you share on social media
  • Set up Google Analytics goals for form submissions, calls, and purchases
  • Create dedicated landing pages for social media campaigns
  • Review metrics monthly, not daily (daily fluctuations are noise)
